Artist Statement:

My art work is a blend of the classical and the modern. I combine the ideas of Symbolism with contemporary looks and concepts. Toward the goal of creating complex and interesting images, I surround my figurative works with layers of symbols and I utilize color to strengthen the emotional content.

Many of my most recent paintings have a central figure, surrounded by elements from nature. These elements may be birds, fish, leaves or anything that catches my artistic eye. Elements from nature are symbols I use as I attempt to explore human relations with memory and time. Fish or birds are blurs of color, like memories passing and fading from the mind. Some pieces are more complex and I must layer the elements around the figure. Paintings within paintings. Separate yet interconnected by the elements and symbols.

Along with the complex concepts and layouts, I will use modern painting ideas. I employ the ideas of non-representational painting and abstraction to create complex and rich backgrounds. The arrangement of color and texture are important. To me the background represents the sub-concious mind. It is dark, complex and mysterious. Often I will use classical glazing techniques to help capture the many different levels of the mind and emotions.

I am a product of the times. I am a Neo-Symbolist, a Neo-Romanticist , and a Post Modernist. Whatever the label, I strive to create honest art, art that has my intellect, heart, and soul in it. Art that can convey my thoughts, feelings and ideas about the Human Animal, the human condition, modern life, and my life.
